India
celebrates Republic Day on January 26 each year. The 75th Republic Day is set
to be observed this year on Friday, marked by various events that are both
similar and different from previous celebrations.
Theme of 75th Republic Day
The Republic Day 2024 parade, themed 'Viksit
Bharat' and 'Bharat – Loktantra ki Matruka,' underscores India's role as a
nurturer of democracy. Scheduled to commence at 10:30 am on January 26, the
parade will follow the route from Vijay Chowk to Kartavya Path. The venue is
expected to accommodate around 77,000 people, with 42,000 reserved for the
general public.
A significant highlight of this year's
celebration is the commencement of the parade with a performance by 100 women
artists showcasing various Indian instruments. Moreover, the event will witness
the participation of an all-women Tri-Service contingent, a historic first in
Republic Day celebrations. Spectators, both in person and virtually, can
anticipate astonishing stunts by the renowned Corps of Signals Motorcycle Rider
Display Team, also known as the 'Dare Devils.'

Security

In terms of security measures, the Indian
Army has implemented heightened measures along the Line of Control in Gurez,
Bandipora, Jammu, and Kashmir, deploying snipers and utilizing the latest
technology for night patrols. Additionally, security has been reinforced in
Odisha, particularly in areas affected by Naxal activities, in anticipation of
Republic Day celebrations.
Significance and Gestation of Indian
Constitution
As India approaches its 75th Republic Day, it
is essential to delve into the historical and cultural significance of this
day. The celebration commemorates India's independence from the British Raj on
August 15, 1947. However, the country did not have a permanent constitution at
that time. The drafting of the constitution took place over two years, and the
Constituent Assembly adopted it on January 26, 1950, when it came into effect.
Republic Day, therefore, celebrates the establishment of the Indian Constitution,
with Dr. Rajendra Prasad assuming the presidency on that day.
Republic Day also pays tribute to the spirit
of independent India, as on January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress
proclaimed Purna Swaraj from colonial rule. The day signifies the power of
Indian citizens to choose their government democratically, making it a national
holiday.
The Constitution, with its fundamental
rights, directive principles, and a delicate balance of powers, aims to create
a just and egalitarian society. The Preamble, adopted on January 26, 1950,
reflects the commitment to the core values guiding the nation.
