A woman named Maria do Socorro Azevedo, 60 years old,
has come forward claiming to be Pele’s eighth child. She asserts her
entitlement to a portion of Pele's assets, which were primarily designated to
his children, amounting to 60% of his estate. Pele, whose birth name is Edson
Arantes do Nascimento, is believed to have acknowledged the possibility of
having an eighth child in his will, although he never met this purported
daughter.
Initially, Pele’s children agreed to undergo a DNA
test to determine the veracity of Maria’s claim. The initial test yielded
negative results. However, it is reported that another test is currently in
progress to further investigate the matter. Pele himself had reportedly
consented to undergo a paternity test, but regrettably, he passed away before
this could take place. Consequently, Maria’s legal representative has made a
request for Pele’s body to be exhumed to conduct the DNA test.
Opposing this request is the lawyer representing Pele’s
widow, Marica Aoki, who deems the exhumation request “unreasonable” and “unlikely”
to be granted. Maria, speaking publicly for the first time, revealed to Record
TV that her mother never informed Pele of her pregnancy. She hails from the
state of Piaui in northeast Brazil and expressed her decision to pursue a DNA
test back in 2019 when she was employed as a maid in Sao Paulo. However, due to
Pele's health concerns and the COVID-19 pandemic, the test was postponed.
Edinho, one of Pele’s seven
acknowledged children and the individual overseeing his estate, previously
stated that tests conducted thus far have confirmed Maria is not their sister.
Pele’s estate is divided with 30% allocated to his widow, Marica Aoki, and the
remaining 60% to be split among his children, with an additional 10% designated
for two grandchildren. Pele’s net worth at the time of his passing was
estimated to be around £78 million. Should Maria’s claim be substantiated, she
would be entitled to a share of the estate alongside her acknowledged siblings.
