The 77th edition of Cannes, which concluded
on Saturday, marked an outstanding year for the country, featuring eight Indian
or India-themed films in the festival lineup.
Indian talent achieved a triple victory at
the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, with Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As
Light," FTII student Chidananda S Naik's "Sunflowers Were the First
Ones to Know," and Anasuya Sengupta of "The Shameless" fame
winning major awards in each of the three competitive sections of the esteemed
event.
Payal Kapadia Makes History
Kapadia, an alumna of the Film &
Television Institute of India, charted history by becoming the first Indian
filmmaker to win the Grand Prix award for "All We Imagine as Light".
It was after 30 years that an Indian film was
at Cannes for the Palm d’Or. American director Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ won the
Palme d’Or.
Kapadia’s film garnered acclaim from
audiences, receiving an eight-minute standing ovation after its screening on
Friday. The film had been generating buzz since its selection for the
competition section a few weeks prior.
“All We Imagine as Light", a
Malayalam-Hindi feature starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam,
revolves around three women in Mumbai who go on a road trip to a beach town.
Reactions from the Industry
Writer-lyricist Varun Grover said it was an
"unbelievable day" for Indian cinema. "Dissent, in art and in
life, is a tough path to choose. But sometimes it does create magic," he
wrote on X.
Actor Richa Chadha called Kapadia's win
historic.
"Wow!! What an incredible achievement
for Indian cinema! Take a bow," said Malayalam star Tovino Thomas.
National Pride and Recognition
"India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her
historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for
her work All We Imagine as Light. An alumnus of FTII, her remarkable talent
continues to shine on the global stage, giving a glimpse of the rich creativity
in India. This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but
also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers," Modi said in a post
on X.
