Tamil
cinema actor Vijay made a significant announcement on Friday regarding the
launch of his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, which is set to debut
in the 2026 assembly elections. His associates have applied for the
registration of the party with the Election Commission of India in Delhi. This
decision comes after his fan club, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, approved the formation
of the political party in a meeting held in Chennai last week.
In a statement, Vijay conveyed that
they have chosen not to contest or support any party in the 2024 general
elections. The primary goal is to participate and emerge victorious in the 2026
Tamil Nadu assembly elections, aiming to bring about the political change
desired by the people. At 49 years old, Vijay joins the ranks of stars who have
transitioned from the silver screen to the political arena, a trend that Tamil
Nadu has been known for, having elected five chief ministers associated with
the film industry, including three actors.
In 2026, Vijay will enter the
political landscape of Tamil Nadu, challenging Dravidian rivals, Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK),
which have held successive governments since 1967. The upcoming Lok Sabha
elections in Tamil Nadu will witness a three-cornered contest among the ruling
DMK in the INDIA bloc, AIADMK, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Vijay expressed that politics is not
just another career for him; rather, it is a sacred duty for the people. He
emphasized his long-standing preparation for this venture, highlighting that
politics is not a mere hobby but his deepest desire, intending to fully immerse
himself in it. So far, Vijay has positioned himself as an opponent to all three
major parties.
Addressing the current political
climate, Vijay pointed out the obstacles hindering unity and progress in Tamil
Nadu, including administrative malpractices, corrupt politics, and a divisive
political culture based on caste and religion. He asserted that Tamil Nadu
yearns for a political change that can usher in a selfless, transparent,
caste-free, visionary, and corruption-free administration.
Reacting to Vijay's decision, the state's sports
minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and BJP state president K Annamalai welcomed the
move. In contrast, AIADMK's organizing secretary D Jayakumar remarked, "In
politics, some drown and some swim. Let’s see what happens to Vijay
