Shiv
Sena (UBT) has affirmed its commitment to combat dictatorship.
The seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Lok Sabha
elections in Maharashtra within the Opposition INDIA bloc has been settled,
under which former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) faction
will fight 21 seats.
Under the deal, brokered after weeks of discussions,
Congress will be contesting 17 seats while Nationalist Congress Party led by
Sharad Pawar will fight for 10 seats instead.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has retained the contentious seat of
Sangli, while Bhiwandi has been taken by Congress. Following intense dispute
between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress over the Sangli seat, Chandrahar Patil's
candidacy was endorsed by Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders at a joint press conference
in Mumbai.
The Congress had immediately opposed the decision,
arguing that Sangli had been the party’s traditional bastion and it had two MLAs
in the constituency, while the Sena had none. It announced the name of Vishal
Patil, the gandson of former chief minister Vasantdada Patil.
The Sena, on the other hand, contended that it had parted
with Kolhapur and Ramtek Lok Sabha seats and therefore wanted to gain at least
the Sangli seat in return for the two.
Sangli MLA Vishwajeet Kadam leading the efforts to bring
this conflict to an end through the Congress high command were not able to
deter Shiv Sena (UBT). But as a concession, Sena presented Vishal Patil with a
Rajya Sabha seat but warned that Sangli would be up against many challenges if
its problems remained unresolved and that consequences could extend statewide.
