Union Home Minister Amit Shah
announced on Monday the establishment of five new districts within the Union
Territory (UT) of Ladakh. The newly formed districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham,
Nubra, and Changthang.
In a post shared on X, Shah
expressed that, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a
developed and prosperous Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has
resolved to create these five new districts. “The new districts, namely
Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for
the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and
cranny,” he added.
Ladakh's Transformation: From Two to
Seven Districts
Previously, Ladakh consisted of just
two districts: Leh and Kargil. Both of these districts operate under autonomous
district councils that govern their respective regions. With the addition of
these five new districts, Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts.
Before 2019, Ladakh was part of the
former state of Jammu and Kashmir. However, in that year, the Central
government led by the BJP revoked the special status of the state. This move
also resulted in the division of the state into two separate union territories:
Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Prime Minister Modi Praises New
Districts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
celebrated the creation of the five new districts in Ladakh, calling it a step
forward towards better governance and prosperity.
“Creation of five new districts in
Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass,
Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing
services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the
people there.” Narendra Modi posted on X.
Development Projects in Ladakh
An official from the MHA highlighted
that with the support of the Central government, Ladakh is now independently
charting its own path toward development.
The official pointed out that Prime Minister
Modi had previously announced a developmental package, known as the Prime
Minister Development Package (PMDP), which comprises 63 projects at a total
cost of Rs 80,068 crore, aimed at the overall development of the former Jammu
and Kashmir state. Out of these 63 projects, nine projects, costing Rs 21,441
crore in total, are exclusively designated for Ladakh. Among these nine
projects, one may be replaced if possible before being dropped, two have
already been completed, and the remaining six are in various stages of
implementation.
