The Knight Riders triumphed as Indian Premier
League champions for the third time in history on Sunday, May 26.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured their
third IPL title with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad
(SRH) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Flawless Performance by KKR
KKR’s bowlers executed a flawless
performance, dismissing SRH for just 113 runs in 18.3 overs, the lowest score
ever recorded in an IPL final. Mitchell Starc and Andre Russell were standout
performers. Venkatesh Iyer’s unbeaten 52, along with Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s
batting contributions, ensured a rapid chase, completing the victory in only
10.3 overs.
Gautam Gambhir’s Return
This victory was particularly special as
Gautam Gambhir returned to KKR as a mentor. Gambhir, who led KKR to their
previous titles in 2012 and 2014, brought a sense of nostalgia and renewed determination
to the team. His presence played a crucial role in KKR's successful campaign.
KKR’s Legacy in the IPL
KKR reaffirmed their status as one of the
premier IPL teams. With their third title, the Knight Riders trail only CSK and
Mumbai, who have five titles each. On the other hand, Pat Cummins faced his
first defeat in a major tournament final in over a year, having previously led
Australia to the World Test Championship and World Cup final.
Congratulations and Celebrations
Mamata Banerjee took to X (formerly known as
Twitter) and wrote, "Kolkata Knight Riders' win has brought about an air
of celebration all across Bengal. I would like to personally congratulate the
players, the support staff and the franchise for their record breaking performance
in this season of the IPL. Wishing for more such enchanting victories in the
years to come!"
Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of KKR, celebrated
the victory by expressing his love and best wishes to the team members. He
embraced all the players and even kissed mentor Gautam Gambhir’s forehead.
