King
Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, just a week after leaving the
hospital for a procedure to address an enlarged prostate. The 75-year-old
monarch began his treatment in London, adding another layer of concern to his
recent health challenges.
The
initial health issues surfaced last month when Buckingham Palace announced on
January 17 that the King would undergo a "corrective procedure" for a
benign enlarged prostate. The diagnosis came after experiencing symptoms while
at his residence in Birkhall, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. However, during this
treatment, a separate issue of concern was identified, leading to subsequent
tests revealing a form of cancer. The specific type of cancer remains
undisclosed, with no further details expected at this stage.
Prince
William, the King's son, is set to resume public duties on Wednesday after his
wife, Catherine, underwent surgery last month. While the nature of her surgery
is unclear, a royal source confirmed it was non-cancerous. Prince William
maintains regular contact with his father, according to sources close to the
Prince of Wales.
Although
the signals from the palace are positive, constitutional provisions are in
place in case the King is temporarily unable to carry out official duties. In
such instances, "counsellors of state" can be appointed through
letters patent to act on the monarch's behalf. While authorized to sign
documents, attend Privy Council meetings, and receive new ambassadors, they
cannot fulfill crucial constitutional roles, such as appointing a Prime
Minister.
Reactions
to the news have poured in from various quarters, reflecting King Charles III's
global stature. Prince Harry, his estranged son, expressed support and planned
a visit from California, marking a poignant family moment amidst the crisis.
World leaders, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe
Biden, sent heartfelt messages, wishing the King a swift and complete recovery.
Former US President Donald Trump also conveyed his good wishes, emphasizing the
King's broad appeal and the universal concern for his well-being.
