Iran has warned the United States against intervening in
the Israel conflict that followed the alleged attack on its consulate in Syria.
Iran has said that it is prepared for war and will deliver a “slap” to Israel.
The Biden administration is increasingly worried about possible attacks on
Israeli soil or military installations.
Attack
in Damascus
Iran's remarks come after an Israel airstrike hit their
consulate in Damascus, which left at least seven Iranians dead including two
generals. While earlier attacks have hit Syria-based Iranian assets, this is
the first time such an operation was directed towards Iranian diplomatic
premises.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a
designated terrorist organization by several countries, including
the United States, of
Iran said among those killed were seven Iranians, including Mohammad Reza
Zahedi, a senior commander with the elite Quds Force that carries out foreign
intelligence and paramilitary operations.
Biden
Assures Netanyahu of US Support
President Joe Biden called Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu reassuring him of US support amidst rising tensions between
Iran and Israel.
“Our teams have been in regular and continuous contact
since then. The United States fully supports the defense of Israel against
threats from Iran,” a senior Biden administration official said.
Iran's
Warning to US
However, shortly after the news of Biden call became public;
Iran issued a statement warning the US to stay out of the conflict. In a
written message to Washington, Iran “warned the US not to get dragged into
Netanyahu's trap,” Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president's deputy chief of
staff for political affairs, wrote on X, referring to Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu. The US should “step aside so that you don't get hit.”
The
"Shadow War" Between Iran and Israel
The clashes between Israel and Iran go beyond ideological
differences or proxy wars often culminating into direct strikes. However, both
states deny carrying out these acts; hence, it has been dubbed as a “shadow war”
with several other countries getting dragged into it the region.
Concerns about a full-scale war are heightened,
particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Despite Iran's claims of
peaceful intentions, Israeli officials remain skeptical, citing intelligence
suggesting otherwise.
