Internet Suspended in Udaipur, Rajasthan After Communal Tensions Flare Over School Fight

Communal unrest gripped Udaipur, Rajasthan on Friday, August 16, following an altercation between two students at a government school, during which one of the students was reportedly stabbed with a knife. Members of Hindu organizations gathered in the city's Madhuban area after the incident, leading to outbreaks of arson and violence.

Internet Services Suspended and Prohibitory Orders Imposed

In response to the escalating situation, internet services were suspended across Udaipur for 24 hours.

The administration also imposed prohibitory orders, which banned the assembly of people in the city. According to police reports, a mob engaged in stone-pelting and set fire to three or four cars, prompting the authorities to take swift action to prevent further violence.

With tensions on the rise and in an effort to minimize damage, local markets, including Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, Chetak Circle, and other nearby areas, were shut down by the evening.

Incident Details and Administrative Response

The two students, who are classmates in class 10 at the Government Senior Secondary School in Bhatiyani Chauhatta, had an altercation in their classroom in the morning. Later, during the lunch break, they continued their dispute at the school’s entrance gate, where one of the boys allegedly stabbed the other in the thigh during the scuffle.

A large crowd soon gathered outside the hospital where the injured student was being treated, with many raising slogans in protest.

Arrests and Security Measures

The Udaipur district collector, Arvind Poswal, stated that the administration received a report of a fight between two students earlier in the day. “This incident occurred in the early hours today. We were informed about a fight between two children, one of whom was attacked with a knife on his thighs. The wound was severe, and the child was immediately taken to the hospital,” Poswal told ANI.

Collector Arvind Poswal added, “I have met with the child, and his condition is stable now. The individual who carried out the knife attack has been arrested, and his father has also been detained,” according to ANI reports. In light of the incident, the administration has deployed forces across nearly all areas of the city, with police officers actively monitoring the situation to maintain order.

Meeting of Authorities to Address the Situation

A meeting was held with key officials and public representatives to discuss the situation, including Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt, Collector Arvind Poswal, SP Yogesh Goyal, Rajya Sabha MP Chunnilal Garasia, Lok Sabha MP Mannalal Rawat, MLAs Tarachand Jain, and Phool Singh Meena.
