The Embassy of India in Russia said on Wednesday that
Mohammed Asfan, a 30-year-old native of Hyderabad, died months after he was
tricked into going to fight in Ukraine. In response to the devastating news,
the Indian embassy tweeted: “We have
learnt about the tragic death of an Indian national Mohammed Asfan. We are in
touch with the family and Russian authorities. Mission will make efforts to
send his mortal remains to India."
According to an official statement from the Ministry of
External Affairs, around 20 Indian nationals work for the Russian army as
support staffs. This individual together with two others had allegedly come to
Russia in November last year, in return for false assurances of their
employment as assistants at some Russian government institutions. He made his
last call home on 31st December before hearing about his tragic passing away.
Having been an Indian
MP from Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier passionately appealed that
Indian youth whom Russians compelled into the Russian Army be saved. The
embassy was contacted by Imran when he went with Owaisi on the matter of
reaching out to them. In the beginning, it was the family who had approached
AIMIM head and Hyderabad’s MP Asaduddin Owaisi for assistance in getting back
Asfan from Russia. The confirmation of AIMIM officials has reached the AIMIM
office that Moscow’s Indian Embassy has confirmed his death.
Based on the reports, Asfan, who was employed in a cloth showroom in Hyderabad, has been cheated by a Dubai-based agent who is popular for his YouTube channel named ‘Baba Vlogs’. This agent uses this channel to create false promises of providing work permits and employment opportunities with highly paying jobs, and he ensured that every candidate would have to pay ?3 lakh. Once they reached Moscow, Asfan, together with his friends, were made to sign documents in the Russian language only to learn later that they had enlisted themselves as “helpers” in the Russian military.
According
to Imran, one of the agents involved in the deception had recently told him
that Asfan's contract had been canceled because he claimed to be injured and
not dead. The new information only creates confusion and increases uncertainty
about what could have happened to Asfan when he died so soon and unexpectedly.
