Hamas Top Leader Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Air Strike in Iran

The Palestinian militant organization Hamas announced on July 31 that its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Iran. At the time of the strike, Haniyeh was in Iran attending the inauguration of the country’s newly elected president.

According to reports from Iranian media, the airstrike targeted a building designated for war veterans in Tehran where Haniyeh had been residing. The strike occurred at approximately 02:00 local time (23:30 GMT).

Hamas Accuses Israel of Assassination

Hamas has laid the blame squarely on Israel for Haniyeh's death, labeling the incident as a "grave escalation." Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri stated, “This assassination by the Israeli occupation of Brother Haniyeh is a grave escalation that aims to break the will of Hamas.”

IRGC's Response and Investigation

While Hamas attributed Haniyeh’s death to an Israeli airstrike, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) indicated that they were investigating the attack and did not immediately disclose the circumstances surrounding the strike.

Hamas issued a statement mourning the loss of its political leader, describing the attack as “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

Although no party immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination, suspicion immediately fell on Israel, which had previously vowed to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders in retaliation for the group's October 7 attack on Israel. That attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of around 250 hostages.

International Reactions

When questioned about Haniyeh’s assassination during a visit to Singapore, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken remarked, “This is something we were not aware of or involved in.” Blinken refrained from speculating on the potential impact on ongoing ceasefire efforts, emphasizing the continued importance of achieving a ceasefire. In Manila, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin expressed his hopes for a diplomatic resolution to tensions along the Israeli-Lebanon border.

Iran's Warning to Israel

Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard issued a stern warning to Israel, stating that the country will face a “harsh and painful response” from Iran and its regional allies due to the killing of Haniyeh. Meanwhile, Hamas’s military wing declared in a statement that Haniyeh’s assassination “takes the battle to new dimensions and will have major repercussions on the entire region.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that Israel will persist in its military campaign in Gaza until Hamas is completely eradicated.

Haniyeh's Role and Legacy within Hamas

Ismail Haniyeh, aged 62, was widely regarded as Hamas's overall leader and was instrumental in negotiation efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh had been elected as the head of the Hamas political bureau in 2017, succeeding Khaled Meshaal.

He had already been a prominent figure, having served as the Palestinian Prime Minister in 2006 following Hamas's unexpected victory in that year's parliamentary elections.

Haniyeh’s involvement with Hamas began in 1987, the year the militant group was founded during the outbreak of the first Palestinian intifada, a period of uprising against Israeli occupation that lasted until 1993.
