French and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has received a
four-year ban from football due to a doping violation, as confirmed by reports
on Thursday. The suspension stems from Pogba's provisional suspension by
Italy's national anti-doping tribunal (NADO Italia) in September. This decision
came after he tested positive for testosterone, a prohibited substance.
The
former Manchester United player, now a key figure at Juventus, was provisionally
suspended following his team's 3-0 victory over Udinese in the Italian Serie A
opener. Italy's sports prosecutors pushed for a four-year ban against the World
Cup-winning French midfielder over the doping allegations.
Pogba,
however, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has expressed his intention
to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a statement, he
asserted his innocence, stating that he has never knowingly or intentionally
taken any substances that breach anti-doping regulations. He expressed his deep
disappointment at the decision, emphasizing that his entire professional
career's integrity has been undermined.
The
standard penalty for doping offenses under the World Anti-Doping Code is a
four-year ban. However, there are provisions for reducing this penalty in cases
where athletes can demonstrate that the violation was unintentional, or if
contamination or other mitigating factors are proven. Pogba's agent, Rafaela
Pimenta, reiterated Pogba's stance, affirming that the player never intended to
contravene any rules.
The
NADO stated that Pogba's test results indicated the presence of prohibited
non-endogenous testosterone metabolites, suggesting external origin. Pogba's
defense is likely to revolve around proving that the presence of these
substances was not due to intentional doping but rather due to inadvertent
ingestion or other external factors.
As
Pogba prepares to contest the ban, the football world awaits the outcome of his
appeal, which could have significant ramifications for his career and
reputation.
