ED Team Attacked in West Bengal during Raid

In a shocking incident on Friday morning, a team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) faced a violent attack during a raid in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The team, conducting raids on properties suspected to be linked to a ration scam, encountered hostility from a group of 100-200 villagers in the village of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh.

Reports suggest that the villagers surrounded the ED team, smashed the screens of their vehicles, and obstructed them from carrying out their operations. The incident has been termed as an "orchestrated attack" by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The situation escalated further as the ED team attempted to raid the residence of block-level leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in connection with the alleged ration scam. TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, also the Fisheries and Animal Resources Officer of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad and Block President of Sandeshkhali 1, was targeted in the raids.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose condemned the attack and criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led state government for its failure to maintain law and order. In a strong message, Governor Bose summoned the West Bengal home secretary and DGP, vowing to explore his constitutional options and take appropriate action.

"The ghastly incident in Sandeshkhali is alarming and deplorable. It's the duty of a civilized government to stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy. As a governor, I explore all my constitutional options for appropriate action in the appropriate manner," stated Governor Bose.

Responding to the incident, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the attack. In the letter, Majumdar emphasized the distressing nature of the incident and called for a thorough investigation into the violent assault on the ED team in Sandeshkhali. The demand for an NIA probe reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for a comprehensive examination of the events leading to the attack.
