On
the 8th of March, Congress Party announced names of 39 people that will vie for
Lok Sabha elections in 2024. A few notable participants in this list include
Rahul Gandhi who will run on the ticket from Wayanad constituency in Kerala and
Shashi Tharoor who represents Thiruvananthapuram also in Kerala. Bhupesh
Baghel, an ex-CM of Chhattisgarh, is contesting from Rajnandgaon; Tamardwaj
Sahu, a former minister would be participating from Mahasamund; and Jyotsna
Mahant is contesting from Korba in Chhattisgarh while DK Suresh representing
Bangalore Rural Karnataka state and K Sudhakaran the Kannur.
The
central election committee of the party ratified these nominations during its
first-ever meeting held today (Thursday) at the national capital. With certain
candidates coming from Telangana, Meghalaya, Tripura, Sikkim, Nagaland and
Lakshadweep islands as well as several others drawn majorly from among those
states with largest representation being Kerala Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.
The
other fifteen out of thirty nine have their origin as General Caste while
remaining twenty four are SC/ST/minority. It should be noted that Congress
party is entering 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a part of INDIA group along with
other opposition parties.
In contrast,
the BJP is projecting an ambitious goal of securing 370 seats for itself and
around 400 seats for its National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Already in a poll
mood, the BJP released its initial list of candidates with 195 names, including
PM Modi and Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister. The last Lok Sabha elections
held in 2019 witnessed a historic win for the BJP by bagging 303 seats out of
the total 543 members of parliament.
