Indore and Surat achieved a shared
distinction as the cleanest cities in India during the Swachh Survekshan
Awards-2023, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at the Bharat Mandapam on
Thursday. This marked the seventh consecutive win for Indore and the inaugural
top position for Surat. Navi Mumbai maintained its third-place position from
the previous year.
In
contrast, three of the lowest-ranked million-plus population cities were
located in West Bengal: Haora (Howrah) at the bottom, with Asansol and Kolkata
closely following as the least clean cities. Faridabad in Haryana and Madurai
in Tamil Nadu secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, among the
worst-performing cities.
The
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) claimed the 90th spot out of 446 cities in
the above 100,000 population category, while the New Delhi Municipal Council
area secured the seventh position in the capital cities list.
The
Swachh Survekshan survey plays a central role in the Union government’s Swachh
Bharat mission, a significant initiative launched during the early years of the
Narendra Modi government. The eighth edition of the survey involved 3,000
assessors covering 4,500 cities, with 3,970 having a population of fewer than
100,000. These assessors evaluated a city's performance on 46 parameters,
including waste collection, inclusive toilets, and improved plastic waste
management.
During
the launch of the Swachh Survekshan-2023 dashboard in Delhi, President Murmu
highlighted the G20 Leaders’ Delhi Declaration commitment to enhancing
environmentally sound waste management, substantially reducing waste generation
by 2030, and emphasizing the importance of zero waste initiatives. She praised
the theme of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” for the 2024 cleanliness survey,
commending the adoption of circular waste management in the second phase of the
Swachh Bharat Mission for promoting sustainable development through recycling
and reusing items.
Varanasi
and Prayagraj were recognized as the cleanest Ganga towns, while Maharashtra,
Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh were acknowledged as the best-performing
states. Overall, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh topped the state
rankings, while Rajasthan, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh found themselves at
the bottom of the cleanliness standings.
